Botox: History and Treatments
Botox has been around for years - it was first introduced in 1989 as a treatment for eyelid twitches and eye muscle disorders. It didn't really become as popular as it is today until 2002 when the FDA approved it to treat frown lines around the eyes. The reason frown lines exist is because they follow the countours of the muscles under the skin. When you inject Botox in to the facial muscles, it relaxes the muscles and as a result - the skin on top of the muscles appears more smooth. By smoothing out the tone of the muscles, the overlying skin is also smoothed and wrinkle lines are dramatically reduced. The effects typically last at least 3 months, often longer. While the procedure is very safe and effective, there is a rare risk of side effects which include bruising at the injection site that lasts several days, eyelid drooping that can last several weeks, nausea and flu-like symptoms.
