Botox: History and Treatments
Botox has been around for years - it was first introduced in 1989 as a treatment for eyelid twitches and eye muscle disorders. It didn't really become as popular as it is today until 2002 when the FDA approved it to treat frown lines around the eyes. As you get older, you get frown lines. These frown lines actually exist on the face as a result of muscle activity below the skin's surface. Your skin just follows the contours of the muscles underneath. When Botox is injected into the facial muscles, it has the effect of relaxing those muscles - and as a result, the skin appears more smooth. By smoothing out the tone of the muscles, the overlying skin is also smoothed and wrinkle lines are dramatically reduced. The effects typically last at least 3 months, often longer. While the procedure is very safe and effective, there is a rare risk of side effects which include bruising at the injection site that lasts several days, eyelid drooping that can last several weeks, nausea and flu-like symptoms.
